The Israelites had much the same problem as do Freemasons today. It is not that the Israelites did not want to worship Yahwah, the problem is that they wanted to worship other gods as well. The problem is known as syncretism - the attempt to combine or reconcile differing beliefs in religion. Freemasons may be Hindus, Buddhists, Moslems, Jews, etc. Yet they meet around a common altar.
